Trumpeter Jim Lake is an active orchestral performer and recording artist. Jim has been the featured trumpet soloist with the Norwalk Symphony, the Metro Chamber Orchestra and One World Symphony. Recently, Jim was heard on Broadway via his recording as principal and solo trumpet in Lincoln Center's Tony-Award-winning production of War Horse.
Other recent recordings include music for trumpets & organ at St Patrick's Cathedral, an upcoming release with Chris Brubeck & the Gramercy Brass Orchestra, and Hem's recent album "Departure and Farewell." Jim's studio recordings - including projects for Koch International Classics, Newport Classics, and Disney - have aired on ABC-TV, Fox TV, ESPN, VH1, and NPR. Jim was the trumpet soloist on the original Olympic-style theme recordings for Major League Baseball's World Baseball Classic.
In addition to performances in nearly every major concert hall in New York City - including Carnegie Hall (numerous appearances), Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater - Jim has served as principal trumpet in orchestras at Aspen, Cape Cod, Houston, New York, and Italy. Jim has performed numerous baroque oratorios - most recently with the NYC Master Chorale - and has performed with the Westchester Chamber Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Jupiter Symphony, Gramercy Brass Orchestra, Ibex Chamber Orchestra, Dicapo Opera, Verismo Opera, Brookhaven Choral Festival, and the Bronx Arts Ensemble.
Along with his work in orchestras, Jim has performed in the ceremonial trumpet ensemble at the Metropolitan Opera's opening night gala, and has appeared on stage trumpeting his way through the role of the wordless but tuneful narrator in a show by the comedy duo Cary and Gallo. As a chamber musician, Jim performs with the Allegro Brass, and is co-leader - along with his spouse, trumpeter Angela Gosse - of the Arcadia Brass Ensemble. Jim has enjoyed appearing occasionally in recital with various organists in NY, both as a soloist and with the Arcadia Brass, and has performed with prominent artists including Sarah Chang, Christoph Eschenbach, David Zinman, Jaime Laredo, and members of the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, St Louis Symphony, and Atlanta Symphony.
In addition to his trumpet activities, Jim currently serves as organist and Music Director at Sacred Hearts & St. Stephen Church in Brooklyn. He earned his Master's degree as a scholarship student at the Manhattan School of Music, and is a graduate of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston, with additional studies at the Aspen Music Festival. His primary trumpet teachers were David Bilger (Philadelphia Orchestra), James Wilt (Los Angeles Philharmonic), and renowned chamber musician Chris Gekker (Orchestra of St. Luke's), with additional studies with Arnold Jacobs (Chicago Symphony), Ed Treutel (Juilliard School), Vincent Penzarella (New York Philharmonic), Louis Ranger (New York Philharmonic) Laurie Frink, Tim Morrison (Boston Pops Orchestra), Robert Sullivan (Cleveland Orchestra), Mauro Maur (Rome Opera), and Roger Rocco. He has studied organ informally with Dr. Jennifer Pascual (music director at St. Patrick's Cathedral).
